Toledo State Hospital
Memory Project
Veterans
Until 2012 it was assumed that only a handful of veterans were interred in the Toledo State Hospital Cemeteries. Over 10 years of intensive research has led to the discovery of 86 veterans whose service spans a period from the Civil War through WWII.

The TSH Old cemetery holds the remains of 53 Civil War Veterans and three career soldiers who served in the through the Civil War or its aftermath. The exact location of only 13 of these graves is known. We hope to eventually locate all the graves and place a veteran’s marker on each veteran’s grave.

The TSH New Cemetery holds the remains of 33 veterans. Four of these served in the Civil War, with the others being Veterans of Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection, WWI, and WWII.

We continue work to identify veterans buried in our cemeteries so that their sacrifices will be recognized alongside other veterans. One wonders why their military service was not recorded. Were they unable or unwilling to talk about it?
